Since its inception in 1950, the department has been providing academic and technical training in the field of agricultural economics to students from Egypt and other Arab countries. In addition, the department has always provided consultations to national and international organizations such as the Ministry of Agricultural and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Also, the department staff members have been working closely in multidisciplinary teams with other academic departments and with the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology in order to help tackle some of the problems facing the food and Agricultural sectors. The department is equipped with computer laboratory, library and modern communication facilities. The research interests of the faculty members cover a wide range of subjects including marketing, farm management, agribusiness, resource economics, econometrics, food and Agricultural policy, cooperatives and rural development. The department offers undergraduate studies as well as M.Sc and Ph.D. mention branches within the dept. Furthermore, the department has established a specialized unit known as Economic and Development Studies Center (EDSC). The center conducts studies, offers consultations and conducts workshops and training programs. Flexibility and business-like approach characterize the center’s management. At present, the center is collaborating with the United Nations Social Development Research Institute. The collaborative research project focuses on agricultural land reform in developing countries.
